The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to households that earned $66,000 or less in the previous year. VITA is a financial stability initiative of the United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties.
At VITA Sites, IRS-certified United Way volunteers provide free, basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.
In 2020, VITA volunteers helped file over 1,000 returns, resulting in an economic impact of over $1.8 million.
THE EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT (EITC)
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) helps working families in our community keep more of their hard-earned income and pay for things like childcare, groceries, and car repairs to get to work. One in five who are eligible for the EITC are leaving money on the table – money that can make a big difference in paying bills and putting food on the table. Households earning $66,000 or less can file their taxes for free at a VITA site during tax season or utilize MyFreeTaxes.com.
