United Way Kicks-Off Tax Season with Ribbon Cutting

United Way Kicks-Off Tax Season with Ribbon Cutting
Set for Tuesday, January 31, 2017

The United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties will host a Ribbon Cutting, presented by the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce, on Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at 11:00 a.m.  The event will be held at the Rutherford County Courthouse on the Historic Square in Murfreesboro to mark the beginning of the United Way Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program for 2017.

The United Way VITA Program, a free service that aids qualifying local residents in claiming their tax refund dollars, connects community members to benefits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which helps workers keep more of the money they have earned to pay for necessities such as reliable transportation, housing and food. United Way is focused on helping families in Rutherford and Cannon counties take immediate steps towards financial stability.

VITA sites can be accessed at Patterson Park Community Center and the Smyrna Public Library and will be open to individuals and families with a household income less than $64,000 annually.

Through the VITA program, residents can also file for free online by visiting the Fifth Third Bank Financial Empowerment Mobile eBus. The eBus will be stationed in front of the Rutherford County Courthouse on January 31, 2017, from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. to assist residents in completing their taxes online.

“We are proud to be partnering with the United Way to bring the Fifth Third eBus to VITA locations throughout Middle Tennessee during tax season,” said Hal Clemmer, Tennessee Regional President for Fifth Third Bank.  “The 40-foot eBus and its 12 computer stations make it easy for our certified bankers to assist qualified residents in completing their taxes online using My Free Taxes, and answer financial questions during their visit.”

In 2016, $1.2 million was returned back into Rutherford and Cannon counties through the United Way VITA program.
