Sixth Annual Stuff the Bus Makes an Impact

Essential school supplies provided to at-risk students.

The United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties recently completed its sixth annual Stuff the Bus program, presented by Hot Topic, to benefit children in Rutherford and Cannon counties. Nearly 15,000 essential school supply items were collected by 70 participating companies and organizations. One hundred and seventy-one volunteers sorted the items at the Stuff the Bus Sort-a-Thon and the supplies were distributed to Rutherford County, Murfreesboro City and Cannon County schools.

McKenna Moore, Director of Volunteer and Strategic Engagement for United Way, said, “School supplies were distributed to Murfreesboro City and Rutherford County central offices and from there disseminated to individual schools. Different students have different needs at any given time, and this allows guidance counselors to hand a student an array of supplies customized to fit their individual situation. The supplies for Cannon County were distributed at the annual We Care Cannon event, which served more than 600 students.”

Organizations, companies and individuals participated in the Sort-a-Thon set up on July 25th and 26th and the event on July 28th  at Hobgood Elementary. Companies participating this year through private donations, in-kind gifts or volunteers included:
