Books from Birth

What is Books From Birth?

The Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation (GBBF) was created in 2004 and charged with a statewide implementation of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program in each of Tennessee’s 95 counties. The GBBF works to support and sustain county programs by providing fundraising, public relations, strategic communications, and volunteer training support.

The United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties is a sustaining partner with the Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation for the local Rutherford County Books from Birth chapter. The United Way is responsible for enrolling children in the program and working to promote and fundraise for the program in Rutherford County.

The program provides a new, age-appropriate book at no cost every month to Rutherford County children from birth until age five enrolled in the program.

By planting the seeds of literacy early in life, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library:

  • Encourages positive parent-child interactions.
  • Improves kindergarten readiness.
  • Sets the foundation for school success.

Children who participate in the program:

  • Recognize pictures, numbers and words.
  • Understand what a story is.
  • Know how to flip through a book.
  • Know the joy of receiving a gift in the mail every month.
  • Love reading stories with their parents and caregivers.
  • Are better prepared for kindergarten.

Enroll a Child

All children from birth through age five who live in Rutherford County are eligible to enroll in the Rutherford County Books from Birth program. You may enroll online through the Governor's Foundation or print a registration form and mail it into The Governor's Foundation.

Within eight to ten weeks, your child should receive a new,  age-appropriate book in the mail every month until your child reaches their fifth birthday.

If your address changes, please notify us, here or call 615-893-4131. If your move into a different county within Tennessee, your child will exit the Rutherford County program, you should call toll-free 1-877-99-books or visit the Governor's Foundation to see if Books from Birth is available in your new community. If you move outside of Tennessee, please contact the Dollywood Foundation at 865-428-9606 to see if your new community has the Imagination Library program.
